Words/phrases used in Texas Hold’Em Poker

“Hole cards” – the 2 cards dealt to each player at the beginning of the game
“Community cards” – the 5 cards placed in the middle of the table
“The flop” – the first 3 community cards placed in the middle of the table
“The turn” – the fourth card placed in the middle of the table
“The river” – the fifth and last card placed in the middle of the table
"Burn" - before the dealer places the community cards on the table, they must "Burn" the top card. This prevents cheating by the dealer
“Small blind” – the first bet that must be placed by the player to the left of the dealer
“Big blind” – the second bet that must be placed by the player left of the small blind
“All in” – when a player bets all of their chips
"Bet" - when a player makes the first bet. This bet must be at least the value of the big blind
“Check” – when a player wants to stay in the game but doesn’t initially want to bet any money. You can only check when no bet has been made. Once a player makes a bet, you cannot check
“Call” – when a player equals a bet made by a previous player
“Raise” – when a player makes a bigger bet than a previous player
“Fold” – when a player decides not to play
“Bluff” or “Bluffing” – making a bet knowing you have a bad hand but hoping other players will fold
“Big Stack” – to have the most chips at the table
“Small Stack” – to have the fewest chips at the table

"Side Pot" - when a player goes all in and subsequent players continue to play and they have more chips then the All In player, a side pot occurs
